The Orange Thimble

Published May 27, 2012 by dyhx

The preggy suggested a brunch catch up and Hua suggested this place. Actually this took place last week but I’ve been so freaking busy this whole week I just never had the time to blog.

Work is piling up gearing up to the show, and people are getting impatient and some, irritating, haha. But oh well, all part of the job, what’s new. I realise this year I’ve somehow slipped into zen mode, I guess it’s a mix of wisdom with maturity, accumulated experience and simply bochap-ness haha. Can’t wait for the show to end, after which I’ll be embarking on a new journey, kicking off with a trip to London! While I’m excited I’m equally apprehensive, especially with the recent mini saga. Oh well save that for another post, back to Orange Thimble.

A small cafe tucked away in a corner of Eng Hoon St, just right beside the Tiong Bahru Bakery, a short walk away from the market, or if u come from the other side, it’s just behind the bus stop at Sin Hoi Sum and Galaxier. There seem to be a sprouting of alot of such cafes lately, especially so in the heartlands like Tiong Bahru. I guess it goes with the overall ambience / image of the estate. Walked past this on the way back

Reminded me of the Margaret Drive days. Where we also brought our clothes out to dry, still remember how we would scramble to bring them in when it rains, including that of our neighbours. Those were the days. I really miss those days alot, the happiest period of my last 30 years. School was enjoyable, everyone was still around, we were happy, days were generally carefree, life was simple.

Ah, I digressed again, back to the cafe. Lovely, home-y, cosy ambience

Food is generally pretty good too, shall just let the pictures do the talking

Mango Frapp and Raison Scone

Raisin Scone

The Frapp is  a little too milky for me but still acceptable. As for the scone, it’s pretty good, and they serve it warm which is lovely. Would have been perfect if it came with cream instead of butter. Would have been even more perfect if the cream was super cold, yet not sweet. Oh how I miss the ones in Australia…

The Chixie

Chicken with Salami on Ciabatta. This is really good! A must-try for any first-timers. The Ciabatta is nicely toasted such that it’s enjoyably warm enough without being too crispy / ‘tough’ when you bite into it. The salami is also interestingly thin and super tender. I’m never a fan of salami but this one is really pretty unique. The potato salad that came on the side is also nicely done, yums!

Chicken Shepherd’s Pie

This, I thought was so-so. The layer of mashed potato on the top is a bit too “toasted” and tough, especially at the sides. The meat beneath it lacks sauce, and the dryness made the meat taste kind of burnt / tough from the dryness.

Overall it’s a pretty nice chill out place I would say. They also seem to have pretty good desserts which we didn’t get to try. Next time maybe.
